VDL VDS strengthens truck component production with AP&T Servo Press line

27 November 2025

Dutch sheet metal specialist VDL VDS has placed an order with AP&T for a state-of-the-art servo press line that will significantly enhance its ability to deliver complex parts for leading European truck manufacturers. The investment reinforces AP&T’s position as a trusted partner to some of the world’s most ambitious and forward-looking OEM suppliers.

The partnership began when long-time local agent Pack International introduced AP&T to VDL VDS, which initially considered integrating AP&T automation with a second-hand press. However, as discussions progressed, it became clear that AP&T’s Servo Press technology offered a more compelling long-term solution.

“Once VDL VDS realized the advantages of our servo press concept – higher productivity at lower energy consumption, improved part quality, and a compact design for their workshop – they decided to invest in a completely new AP&T line,” says Hilko Siebels, Area Sales Manager at AP&T Group.

Why AP&T?

Several factors tipped the scales in AP&T’s favor. The servo press line combines energy efficiency, process flexibility, and advanced automation in a compact layout. Its full servo cushion converts drawing energy back into electricity instead of wasting it as heat. This in turn enables significant energy savings and enhances process control.

Just as importantly, AP&T delivers on its One Responsible Partner concept, providing press, automation, and process know-how from a single source, supported by a strong local service network.

“This approach means that while VDL VDS is buying equipment they are at the same time securing long-term reliability, innovation, and expertise,” says Annika Hagström, Technical Sales Manager at AP&T Sweden.

Pieter Aarts, Managing Director of VDL VDS, explains the expectations guiding the investment:

“Before starting the investment process, we prepared an extensive list of requirements. We wanted the new solution to be a real step forward – highly automated, energy efficient, and fully compatible with the parts we already produce. Energy consumption was especially critical, not only from an environmental point of view, but also because our grid connection is limited. With AP&T we found a supplier combining press and automation know-how who was able to offer a low-energy solution without compromising output or performance,” he says.

Ambition meets expertise

As part of the VDL Group, VDL VDS is known for its strong capabilities in automated sheet metal processing, including stamping, welding, and laser cutting. Until now, its deep drawing operations have been limited to single-stage tools. This new project introduces a multi-station press line with up to four die stations, representing a significant step forward for the company.

“VDL VDS has an unusually deep understanding of press technology and our servo press concept,” says Annika Hagström at AP&T. “Their technical ambition is very high, which makes this collaboration both demanding and very rewarding.”

Regarding the decision to choose AP&T over other suppliers, Pieter Aarts from VDL VDS adds:

“The combination of press performance and the dedication of the AP&T team when it came to developing the most suitable solution for our requirements made it an easy choice.”

A turnkey solution for the truck industry

The line ordered by VDL VDS includes a 1,500-ton servo press with a full servo cushion, a destacker, three AP&T SpeedFeeder® units, and a stacking system, all integrated into a fully automated turnkey setup. It will be used to produce sheet metal parts for both conventional and electric trucks from two of Europe’s leading OEMs.

“With limited electrical capacity available at VDL VDS’s site, productivity could easily have been compromised,” says Mikael Karlsson, Product Manager Presses at AP&T. “But our energy-efficient servo technology allows them to meet their annual output targets despite these constraints.”

Building a trusted partnership

For both companies, the collaboration has been characterized by openness, respect, and a shared focus on innovation.

“In just a short time we built a very high level of trust,” Hilko Siebels reflects. “Being entrusted by VDL VDS and the VDL Group to deliver this equipment makes us genuinely proud.”

The sentiment is shared on the VDL VDS side.

“AP&T is a new supplier for us, although we have been familiar with the company for a long time. We have found them to be a dedicated team that recognizes and understands our questions. Cooperation has been professional and transparent. AP&T listened to our needs and helped us take a technological step forward,” says Pieter Aarts.

Next steps and expectations

Delivery and installation of the press line are scheduled for fall 2026. While the project is tailored to VDL VDS’s specific needs, AP&T expects the insights gained to be valuable in future customer projects.

“This installation confirms the relevance of our servo press technology,” says Mikael Karlsson. “We look forward to see the equipment in production – and to experience its full potential together with VDL VDS as the line goes into operation.”
